Updates to the Oxford Textbook of Medicine Online

November 2011:
This update sees 25 chapters in the sections on Endocrinology and Rheumatology reviewed by the contributors and editors, and key developments added to 40 chapters from other sections, including:

  • Immunodeficiency - with updated classification of primary immunodeficiency states, and descriptions of newly recognised conditions causing susceptibility to mycobacterial disease
  • Cancer chemotherapy and radiation therapy - with extensive updating to include a discussion of combination chemotherapy, and description of new antimetabolites, alkylating agents, natural compounds with antitumour activity, hormone-directed therapies, differentiating agents, and other targeted compounds.
  • Autoimmune rheumatic disorders and vasculitis in pregnancy. Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) - pathophysiology, epidemiology and clinical management has been extensively revised.

44 further chapters have been reviewed and confirmed as being up-to-date.

For full details of this update, view front matter of the resource.

In addition, a new symbol Update Symbol has been introduced to indicate where, compared to the prior version of the text, changes of substance have been made. This symbol, used in conjunction with the Updates box found at the top of every updated chapter, will help readers quickly identify significant changes, keeping them up to date with current developments.

About updates:
To ensure that the Oxford Textbook of Medicine continues to reflect current clinical practice, content within the online version is systematically reviewed and updated. Where key changes have occurred within a subject area, authors are able to make additions and alterations to existing content; however, where major developments have occurred within a subject area, a full rework of the relevant chapter is undertaken, including the addition of any new videos, images, and chapter appendices. A summary of all updated content is provided on the Oxford Textbook of Medicine homepage, with detailed descriptions provided within each updated chapter, and an overview of updates in the front matter of the resource.
